Why Is Johnny So Detached?

By: Thomas Ottavi, Ph.D.

Today, more students are coming to school utterly detached from school and a desire to learn there. It would wrong to assume that these students are merely apathetic, unmotivated or lazy. Some may have attachment issues that can result from different levels of early childhood neglect, abuse, and trauma. Detached students sometimes come with varying degrees of past home disruption, placements in foster care, adoptive homes, residential placements, or emergency shelter placements. The school setting can be an important place to assist in stabilization for these students and families.

This book is full of strategies and skill-building interventions, activities and hints school professionals can use to help these students an/or pass on to their parents. It combines research and theory on attachment issues and addresses five types of detachment for students including:
• Detachment from Self
• Detachment from Role of Student
• Detachment from Peers and School Support
• Detachment from Basic Effort
• Detachment from Sense of Success
