Dr.
Robert P. Bowman is widely recognized for his distinctive contributions
to the fields of mental health and education with an emphasis
on school counseling. He is especially known as a prolific creator
of unusual, effective approaches and programs for helping young
people. Today, Dr. Bowman continues his work as an avid collector
of research-based practices that work with youth when “all
else fails.” He is also known as a relentless cheerleader
for professionals working with chronically troubled youth.
Dr. Bowman has conducted professional seminars, conference
keynotes and/or motivational presentations in 42 of the United
States and
in Canada, Belgium, England, Italy, West Germany, Puerto Rico,
US Virgin Islands, St. Marten, St. Thomas, Kenya, Tanzania, Ecuador,
Malaysia and China.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Bowman was a faculty member in the
Counselor Education program at the University of South Carolina.
He retired from this position in 2002. Dr. Bowman is currently
serving as President of Developmental Resources, Inc. Since its
start, this company has provided training seminars for more than
100,000 educational and mental health professionals. He is also
serving as President of YouthLight, Inc., a publishing company
that features resources for school counselors and other helping
professionals.
Dr Bowman also worked for years to link professionals in a professional
network that eventually became the National Peer Helpers Association
(NPHA). He then served as the first editor of their journal, Peer
Facilitator Quarterly, for six years. Later, he received the NPHA
Award for Outstanding Service. In addition, Dr. Bowman was inducted
into the inaugural Hall of Fame in the Illinois State University
College of Education. More recently, he received the President-Elect
Lifetime Professional Achievement Award from the South Carolina
Counseling Association.

Through his career, Dr. Bowman has authored numerous book chapters
and articles in professional journals. He has also authored or
coauthored more than 24 books and programs.
